Essential Oils for Bug Bites (With DIY Rollerball Recipe)

Essential oils have so many powerful benefits for everyday things. One of the things we love using them for is for itchy bites.

My daughter in particular gets bitten a lot, mosquitoes just seem to love her! Not only does she get bitten but she also swells up and gets really red where the bite is.

We tried so many things before using essential oils (including antihistamines) but none of them worked as well for us as essential oils do.

When bugs, like mosquitoes bite, they draw a tiny bit of blood whilst at the same time injecting some of their saliva into your skin. This saliva causes your body to release histamine as an immune defence, which then causes the itchiness.

Thankfully, essential oils can help!

I have compiled a list of essential oils you can use to help not only fight of the itch but keep them away in the first place!

Lavender is known for its calming and relaxing qualities, but did you know it is also calming on the skin. It has great skin soothing qualities and really helps with the itch, so is a great essential oil to use for bites. This oil was the first oil we tried on my daughter and saw amazing results. So even if this is the only oil you have it can still work wonders on your itchy bites.

Peppermint essential oil is very cooling. Not only is it great for bites, but its great at repelling bugs naturally. The cooling effect will help to soothe the skin and reduce the itching sensation.

Tea tree (Melaleuca)

Tea Tree essential oil, also known as Melaleuca, is known for its cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the skin. It is great for skin irritations and perfect for using on bug bites.  It can help to reduce the risk of an infection and may help to reduce the swelling and itchiness.

The Lemongrass plant is great at naturally repelling insects. The essential oil has the same effect of repelling insects whilst also helping to reduce inflammation which may come from a bug bite.

Helichrysum is known for improving appearance of the skin and reducing appearance of blemishes. It is an expensive oil, so I wouldn’t rush out and buy it just for bug bites. However, i you have this one in your cabinet it can be a great one to use on those itchy bites.
