Why diffuse? (the benefits of diffusing oils)
Firstly, it’s good to understand why we diffuse essential oils and what the benefits are of doing it. Notice how aromatherapy has the word aroma in it? That’s because there is so much in the smell of an oil.
Smells have the power to evoke feelings and memories and essential oils can have a positive impact on our emotions and mood as well as our overall wellbeing.
Here are some of the ways diffusing essential oils can benefit our bodies:
- Air Purification
- Breathing and open airways
- Uplifting and energizing for mood
- Calming and grounding for mood
- Minimise seasonal threats
Different types of diffusers
There are many different methods of diffusing essential oils. This article focuses on using an ultrasonic diffuser but there are many more ways to get the aromatic benefits of essential oils.
Here are some different ways you can diffuse your oils:
- Ultrasonic diffuser
- Reed diffuser
- Aromatherapy jewellery
- Car vent diffusing
- Room Sprays
- Essential oil inhalers
- Reed diffusers
- Cotton balls
- Scented pinecones
How long should you diffuse for?
Most people think you should diffuse all day long, and whilst this may make your house smell amazing, there is no evidence to suggest longer diffusing has more health benefits.
In fact, they have found that short increments of diffusing are better for your health. 20mins on, 20 mins off is the best way to diffuse your oils.
This method also saves you money by not going through as many drops of oil.
How many drops should you use?
A big question people have is ‘how many drops should I put in my diffuser?’ It’s actually a tricky answer to give because there are so many factors that affect how many drops you should use, such as
- The size of your room
- The ventilation in the room
- How strong you like the scent
- The oils you are using – some have stronger scents then others
I usually say that a good average is 4-6 drops in a 100ml diffuser is a good start. You can always add some more drops later if you need to.
Tips for diffusing
- Use distilled/filtered water
- Clean your diffuser regularly
- Ensure there is good ventilation in the room
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
Diffuser blends to try
If you’re not sure what oils to use or what blends to combine, then here are a few recipes to get you started.
Directions for using your diffuser
Fill your diffuser with water. There is usually some kind of line or red dot indicating the maximum amount of water that should be put in there.
Next, add your oils into your diffuser, you can check out some ideas of blends to use HERE
Turn your diffuser on and enjoy the aroma! You may have a few different buttons and settings, on the diffuser below I like to diffuse on the 1 hour setting, then wait for and hour, turn it on again and repeat. As mentioned above intermittent diffusing is the best way to get the health benefits from your oils.
I hope you enjoy using your diffuser and paying around with lots of lovely blends. If you want to know more about diffusing I have some other blog posts you may be interested in:
